Carglumic acid is used for the treatment of hyperammonaemia. Carglumic acid is a carbamoyl phosphate synthetase 1 (CPS 1) activator.
Introduction
Carbaglu (carglumic acid) is a Carbamoyl Phosphate Synthetase 1 (CPS 1) activator indicated as:
• Adjunctive therapy for the treatment of acute hyperammonemia due to the deficiency of the hepatic enzyme N-acetylglutamate synthase (NAGS).
• Maintenance therapy for the treatment of chronic hyperammonemia due to the deficiency of the hepatic enzyme N-acetylglutamate synthase (NAGS).
Carglumic acid is indicated for the treatment of acute hyperammonemia and chronic hyperammonemia. Carglumic acid, sold under the brand name Carbaglu among others, is used for the treatment of hyperammonaemia. It was approved for medical use in the United States in March 2010.[7] Carglumic acid is an orphan drug.
