Aranesp (darbepoetin alfa) injection
Darbepoetin may be used for patients on kidney dialysis or for those not on dialysis. Anemia can also occur in people who are receiving chemotherapy to treat cancer. Darbepoetin alfa is used to treat severe anemia in these patients. This medicine is available only with your doctor's prescription.
Aranesp is an erythropoiesis-stimulating agent (ESA) indicated for the treatment of anemia due to:
• Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) in patients on dialysis and patients not on dialysis.
• The effects of concomitant myelosuppressive chemotherapy, and upon initiation, there is a minimum of two additional months of planned chemotherapy.
Darbepoetin alfa medication was approved in September 2001, by the US Food and Drug Administration for treatment of anemia in patients with chronic kidney failure by intravenous or subcutaneous injection. In June 2001, it had been approved by the European Medicines Agency for this indication as well as the treatment of anemia in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.
