Cymevene (ganciclovir) 500 mg powder
Ganciclovir, An antiviral agent used to prevent or treat cytomegalovirus infections that may occur when the body's immune system is suppressed. In gene therapy, ganciclovir is used with an altered herpes simplex virus-1 gene to kill advanced melanoma cells and brain tumor cells.
Cymevene is an antiviral medicine that is used to treat or prevent infection with cytomegalovirus (CMV) in immunocompromised individuals (people with a weakened immune system). CMV is a common virus that belongs to the herpes virus family. It can infect almost anyone but usually remains dormant in healthy people, rarely causing symptoms. However, the virus can cause problems in people with a weakened immune system such as people with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) or who are undergoing cancer treatment or taking medicines to prevent rejection of an organ transplant. In these patients, CMV can result in severe or life-threatening infections that attack various organs including the lungs, brain and eyes.
Ganciclovir is indicated for: • Sight-threatening CMV retinitis in severely immunocompromised people • CMV pneumonitis in bone marrow transplant recipients • Prevention of CMV disease in bone marrow and solid organ transplant recipients • Confirmed CMV retinitis in people with AIDS (intravitreal implant) • It is also used for acute CMV colitis in HIV/AIDS and CMV pneumonitis in immunosuppressed patients. • Ganciclovir has also been used with some success in treating Human herpesvirus 6 infections. • Ganciclovir has also been found to be an effective treatment for herpes simplex virus epithelial keratitis. Cymevene contains the active substance ganciclovir and is available as a powder to be made into a solution for infusion (drip) into a vein.
